Of course you know this is the show where I help you live stronger, thinner, healthier, and happier. I am at the Winnipeg Manitoba Airport right now getting ready to fly back to the states going through Toronto. I have been in Winnipeg for the past few days. My brother, Rich, and I were speaking in front of a great audience. This is the first time we had ever been in Winnipeg. The saying on the license plates there is Friendly Manitoba and I have got to tell you that’s pretty darn accurate. These were some of the friendliest people I have ever seen on the planet. There’s something about being in Canada that I have noticed. The people are just really friendly. I love it and I can’t wait to come back to Canada. Thanks so much for having me speak at the conference.

Taxi Cab Confessions

So I have to tell you some pretty interesting, on my cab ride over here. The cab driver was a young Indian man, really nice guy. This guy was really nice and started to ask me questions like, how long have I been in Manitoba and where am I from? And that kind of morphed into him asking what I do for a living. Over the years it has been very tough for me to explain what I do for a living. I used to go into all this detail and it was hard to understand. These days I simply say, I’m a motivational speaker. It’s the easiest thing to say because everybody understands what that is. And then if they want to ask me more about it, that’s fine they can do that. So that’s what I said when he asked me. He looked in the rear view mirror and his whole face lit up. He looked at me and said could you please motivate me? I said well sure, we’ve got about 10 minutes in this cab so I will do my best to motivate you. Tell me what you need motivation for. He began to tell me his story. He had come from India to Manitoba about 4 1/2 years ago. He drives the cab on the weekends. And his dream in life is to become an engineer. He said that he had just started school and found managing his time difficult. So we got into a great conversation. And he said well how can I organize my time? I said that the first thing you need to do is to figure out what your priorities are. And then identify anything that is sucking your energy or sucking your time away. Then you have to learn how to minimize that. He was driving so he couldn’t take notes but I could tell he was like a sponge. He could not get enough information from me. He asked me how I did this? I told him that i teach this stuff on my podcast and told him a little about the podcast. I told him that I teach my friends and followers that if you really want to do something in your life, you’re gonna be able to do it. I looked at him and said I can tell that you’re really passionate about becoming an engineer. He said yes, I really want to be an engineer. And I said, guess what? You’re gonna do it. You’re gonna succeed. Just work hard and you’re gonna do it. I told him not to get led down different paths.

Finding Yourself

On this short drive, I started thinking to myself about the time that I wasted in high school, college, and dental school. I really didn’t know what I wanted.  I didn’t really fit in with any particular group. I wasn’t the most athletic or the smartest in the class. I kind of drifted along doing my own thing but not really knowing what direction to go. That actually followed me into college as well. I spent a lot of my younger years drifting from one thing into another. From the outside a lot of people thought that I was happy and doing the right thing and going to be successful. But I never felt like I was making my own decision. I always felt that decisions were made for me. These days, over the past 10 years, I’m the one that’s making every single one of my decisions. I don’t let outside forces, other people, and society dictate what I do. And ever since I’ve learned this and been my own person, my life has totally changed. I just love helping and influencing other people.

During the cab ride, I also told him that it’s not just about being an engineer but you have got to be healthy and happy. Those are the most important things in life. I started talking to him a little about what I eat and how to I don’t eat or wear any animal products. He was all ears. Again, he was just soaking up information. During this 10 minute ride we became great friends.

Where do you get your protein?

As it turns out he is vegetarian. He doesn’t eat meat but he does eat dairy and eggs. So he said where do you get your protein? Of course as you know it’s a great question and I am asked this all the time. So I said, I get my protein from plants. Human beings do not need as much protein as the food industry tries to make everyone believe. I get plenty of protein from plants and I do just fine. I recommended for him to read the book Proteinaholic by Dr. Garth Davis. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. I believe that in this 10 minute taxi ride, I changed another life. I didn’t pressure him into going vegan. I try to be very kind and respectful to people. Let’s face it, most people are eating meat, dairy, and eggs. If I tried to look down on people, I wouldn’t have any friends or followers. For 58 years of my life, I was eating meat and eggs and consuming dairy products and wearing animal products. So who am I to look at someone that’s doing that now and say you’re wrong or you’re a horrible person?! I prefer to lead by example. I try to inspire and show people how it’s worked for me. And not just for me but for the animal and the planet. I know it’s hard to believe that we talked about all this stuff in that 10 minute cab ride but we did. So I have a new Facebook friend 🙂 I asked him to please stay in touch and I hope he does. I believe he will.

So I am sitting here at the airport. About 5 minutes ago I heard someone yelling Dr. Madow, Dr. Madow. I’m in Canada and don’t really know anyone here but sure enough this guy came up. He was in my conference the other when I spoke and he recognized me. He made my day. He said you’re talk was so good. I really enjoyed it. I just wanted to come over and say hello to you and thank you.

So the life of a motivational speaker is good. I love it when I inspire and get positive feedback. But it’s not always simple sitting in airports, taking taxis and rental cars, and staying in hotel rooms. It’s not always as much fun as it sounds 🙂

Hateful People

I had some haters on Facebook over the weekend as well. I posted a really innocuous message on Facebook. I was in the concierge lounge yesterday getting my breakfast. And of course they had eggs and bacon and all that. So I avoided that. And I saw this beautiful container of oatmeal. I have enough experience to know that a lot of times at restaurants and hotels the oatmeal can contain milk. So I asked the nice young lady there if the oatmeal contained milk so she checked and said yes it does contain milk. So I put this friendly on Facebook which said to people who are vegan, please be aware if you are eating in a restaurant or hotel, ask if it has dairy because you would be surprised at how often oatmeal has dairy. And oh my gosh, I got this horrible comment from someone. This woman was so hateful and told me that she feels that cows have horrible lives but that vegans have even more horrible lives. She went on and on telling me how horrible vegans are. It was one of the most hateful messages I have ever received on Facebook. And then I had another woman that left a comment this morning. Is it a full moon today?

As my friend, Laurie, says when you are out there helping people and when you are well known, you are going to get a percentage of people that just hate you and make crazy comments. I ‘ve had some other people tell me that over the past few days. But I am very thick skinned. I am not going to stop spreading the word or inspiring people because of a few crazies out there. I feel really bad for these people. This one woman who attacked me so horribly on Facebook, I noticed that she didn’t have a picture. I don’t know if it was the right thing to do but since she was telling me how healthy she was and how unhealthy I was, I told her to send me a picture. And she refused to send me one. But most of the people on social media are very nice and want to learn. If there are hateful people, I usually just block them or unfriend them. It’s not worth the time. Remember, don’t waste time on things that aren’t important. Get rid of the stuff that is taking the energy away.

My passion is to help others and help you live a fun great life. Time goes by very quickly and the older you get the faster it goes. I want you to hang with. Let’s make this planet a better place to live for more people and more animals. Let’s live our lives the best we possibly can.
