Good Enough

I think back to the day I decided to start a podcast. I didn’t really know how to do it so I went online and got a little bit of equipment. My equipment was basically a USB microphone that hooked up to my computer. I used GarageBand and did all my editing. But the crazy thing was the microphone wasn’t all that good. When I was in a big open room, it had almost like an echo effect.

So I didn’t really know what to do. And after thinking about it and going online to try to figure out how to get the sound quality better. So my recording studio became my walk in closet at home. Because everything hanging in the closet dampens the sound. It’s almost like a sound studio. I would go into my walk in closet and close the door behind me and I was in my private sound studio. And the sound was much better.

And then I advanced to getting much better equipment and opened up a home studio using a dedicated room in my house. It was a little weird bringing guests to record in a closet after all! I still use this studio but I have found out that it is not the quality of sound that is actually most important. Don’t get me wrong. I strive to make the quality good. The sound has to be decent.

Today, I am outside near my fountain which flows into a small pond. If you listen closely you can hear the sound of the water trickling. It’s so peaceful out here. So it’s my studio for today.

Last episode if you remember, I was meeting someone for dinner and I was in a parking lot and a landscaping crew found me. The point here is that it’s more about the connection that I have with you rather than the sound quality.

It’s really interesting! I go into some of these Facebook groups that are for podcasters and they are asking all these technical questions. The technical questions are unbelievable but I am thinking to myself, I wonder how important it is for these people to seriously connect with their audience. You can have the best microphone in the world but if you are not relating to your audience, I don’t care what kind of mic you have. It doesn’t matter what kind of technical equipment you have if you’re not relating.

I went to a podcast convention a couple summers ago. And it seemed like everyone was more concerned about the equipment than what they were going to share.

I am speaking today into a portable Zoom mic that probably costs between $100 and $200. It’s decent. It has a pretty good sound quality to it. Does it sound like I am in a high end professional studio? Probably not but it’s good enough.

Sometimes in life we strive to be perfectionists. But sometimes we just have to go with good enough. If you wait until something is perfect, you’re probably not going to get it done. Sometimes you just have to say, “this is good enough”. And I am not referring to heart surgery or brain surgery. I think that has to be perfect. But podcasting or anything else in your life, sometimes you just have to do it. Sometimes you just have to say “Ok, we’re done. That’s good enough.” And move on to the next thing.

Eating Tips

I had an appointment this morning and I went out to lunch right after the appointment. And I want to share a few things with you about my lunch and about eating. I’ve learned a lot about eating over the years and I think I can really help you quite a bit. I’m a “vaygan” but I am not really going to talk about being a vegan all that much. This goes for anybody. I believe that teaching by example is the best way to get someone to convert.

So I went to lunch today at a place that had some really good vegan options. It’s a place called the Flying Avocado in Owings Mills, Maryland. I’ve been going there for years, and one of the things on that I really like on the menu there is this rainbow salad that they have. It consists of a lot of different types of greens and other types of fruit and berries. Which makes it’s like you’re eating a rainbow. And the dressing is to die for. It is made from pureed fruit with no oil or anything like that. It is flipping delicious!! If you are ever in Owings Mills, Maryland, I recommend going to the Flying Avocado and trying it.

So I am there and I am doing some work. I was doing some writing like I normally do when I am eating lunch. I LOVE sitting down by myself with my MacBook and doing writing or some type of work. It really works well for me. It is relaxing. I don’t know if it’s endorphins or energy I am getting from the healthy food. And it’s been like this for years. But I do some of my very best work sitting down and eating lunch. I will sit at a restaurant for two or three hours sometimes just hanging, working, and eating.

So I was there today and I ordered the salad and started my work. I was fairly hungry but was eating the salad slowly. When I finished the salad, I still felt a little hungry. So of course when you’re hungry, you’re first thought is to order more. I figured this out a long time ago and try my best to apply this principle all the time when I am eating. When you eat, your brain takes a little while to catch up with your stomach. If you’re really hungry and you gulp your food down chances are you are still going to be hungry. So you keep eating until you really stuff yourself. So I ate my salad fairly slowly and when I finished I was still kind of hungry. I didn’t succumb to getting anything else because I didn’t think I needed anything else. I had a big breakfast with cereal, fresh fruit, flax seeds, and chia seeds. So I just continued to do a little bit of work. It can take 15-20 minutes for the brain to catch up to the stomach. After about 20 minutes, I felt totally comfortably full. I wasn’t stuffed but I wasn’t hungry.

They say to eat until you feel about 80% full. And then wait about 20 minutes and you’re gonna feel totally satisfied. I would like you to try this. I think it will go a long way to helping you maintain a good healthy weight.

I want to talk about weight a little bit more too because I want to make sure you understand that just because someone is thin does not necessarily make them healthy. You can be very thin and look good on the outside, but still be very unhealthy on the inside. So it still depends on what you put in your body and how you’re fueling your body. I highly recommend a plant based whole food diet that is low in or lacking oil, sugar, or salt. You will get these naturally from your food. So keep these as low as you can. Of course we need oil and fat to live but that doesn’t mean that you need to put olive oil on your sauteed spinach. Because if you are eating the right combination of nuts, and seeds, and things like avocados, you are getting plenty of fats and oils. You are getting them naturally as opposed to eating them processed.

Our bodies were made to move. I have been talking about moving our bodies since Episode #1.

Something else I learned quite some time ago. Some people think that if they are going out to dinner that evening, then they won’t fill up throughout the day to “save room”. I look at it the opposite way. Say I am joining someone for dinner at 6pm and I begin to get hungry at 5pm, most people would hold off and wait for dinner. But here’s what I do. I wrote about this in my book many years ago. I like to eat before I eat. I will eat something light to satisfy my appetite so that when I get there I am not starving and I don’t make bad decisions.

I just did this the other night when I was meeting my cousin for dinner. I happened to be near an organic grocery store so I bought something there and I ate it as a snack. I’m not saying to pig out but eat something healthy. We ended up sitting around for quite some time before ordering and if I had not had that snack I would have been starving. Instead, I was comfortable. A little hungry but not in a hurry at all. 

We all have to eat but if have some of these tips to use, I think it makes your life better in general. You don’t have to be vegan to use them.
