Ate Mushrooms and Got My Car Serviced

Life is Too Short to Be Doing the Things You Don’t Want to Do

There’s a recurring theme I’ve discovered during my years of microdosing magic mushrooms and embracing a simpler, more intentional way of living: life is just too short to waste on things that don’t set your soul on fire. If you’re like me, you’ve probably spent too much time doing what you thought was “right,” what others expected, or what seemed practical. But here’s the kicker: none of that leads to true happiness.

In my latest podcast episode, “Ate Mushrooms and Got My Car Serviced,” I dive into this concept, reflecting on a day that was, by all accounts, ordinary but also extraordinary in its simplicity. It’s a story about perspective, purpose, and making every moment count. Let me take you on a journey, starting with a simple morning of microdosing and a car service appointment that became a moment of profound clarity.

The Joy in Simple Moments

That morning, I microdosed some magic mushrooms and went to my local car dealership to have my car serviced. Sounds mundane, right? But here’s the thing: the dealership isn’t your typical grease-and-coffee kind of place. It has a cozy little café where you can grab breakfast, work, or just take a breather.

As I sat there with my laptop and notebooks, sipping my coffee, I realized something profound: I was exactly where I wanted to be. My life, though not always perfect, was finally aligned with what I value most—peace, purpose, and authenticity.

It wasn’t always like this. For decades, I chased what I thought I was supposed to chase—professional accolades, social approval, and material success. But here’s the truth: doing what others expect of you or sticking to societal norms can keep you stuck in a cycle of unfulfillment.

Why Are You Doing Things You Don’t Love?

Ask yourself this: why are you doing things that don’t bring you joy?

We only get a finite amount of time. So why spend it in jobs you hate, surrounded by people who drain your energy, or engaged in activities that don’t light you up?

Life’s too short to settle for an “okay” existence. It’s not enough to aim for an 8 out of 10 on the happiness scale. I’m talking about striving for a 10—feeling good every single day.

If that sounds unattainable, let me assure you it’s not. But it requires a mindset shift and some tough decisions.

Take Stock of Your Life

Start by stepping back and evaluating where you are right now.

  • What’s working? Celebrate it.
  • What’s not working? Be honest with yourself.
  • What changes can you make today to align your life with your values and passions?

Too often, we keep doing the same things, hoping for different results. You know the saying—it’s the definition of insanity. If something isn’t working, it’s time to switch it up.

Surround Yourself with the Right People

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the company you keep defines you.

If you’re surrounded by people who don’t share your values, who drag you down, or who live in a way that doesn’t resonate with you, ask yourself: Why?

I used to think I needed to keep up with certain social standards—expensive clothes, fancy dinners, the latest gadgets—but I realized that wasn’t me. Now, I prioritize simplicity. I focus on relationships that nurture me, activities that inspire me, and possessions that truly serve a purpose.

Simplify to Amplify

Here’s another big takeaway: simplicity is freedom.

I’ve let go of the need for more—more money, more stuff, more everything. Instead, I focus on having enough:

  • One home that I love and take care of.
  • Vehicles that meet my needs without excessive upgrades.
  • Meals cooked at home, where I control the ingredients and keep it healthy.

Simplifying my life has allowed me to focus on what truly matters: health, meaningful connections, and experiences that enrich my soul.

The Power of Change

One of the most beautiful things about life is that it’s never too late to change.

Had I continued living the way I did 20 years ago, who knows where I’d be now? I can tell you one thing—it wouldn’t be here, sharing this message with you. Change is necessary, and it’s good.

If something in your life isn’t serving you, don’t be afraid to let it go. Whether it’s a toxic relationship, a draining job, or an unhealthy habit, the decision to move on could be the best gift you ever give yourself.

Keep It Simple, Keep It Real

There’s a popular saying: K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid). Now, I’m not calling anyone stupid here—you’re smart, and you know that simplicity often leads to clarity.

When you strip away the excess—whether it’s possessions, obligations, or even negative thought patterns—you make room for what truly matters.

Let’s Do This Together
