I Broke Every Rule – Still Alive!

Welcome, my friends, to a podcast episode unlike any other. Today, we’re diving into a journey of experimentation, defiance of norms, and ultimately discovering what works best for our health and well-being. This one’s personal, a little daring, and absolutely transformative.

This podcast isn’t about microdosing—though I promise we’ll circle back to that—but about a critical lesson I’ve learned from my own journey: sometimes, to truly live, you have to break the rules.

Breaking the Rules

So, what rules did I break? Let me start with this: I’ve always considered myself a relatively healthy eater. For years, I followed conventional wisdom—cutting fat, eating plenty of vegetables, even going vegan for seven years. Yet, despite my efforts, I wasn’t feeling my best. I was gaining weight, battling fatigue, and struggling with physical aches.

Then, I stumbled upon something radical: the carnivore and keto diets. It sounded extreme, even dangerous. Yet, the more I researched, the more compelling the evidence became. Was it possible that a diet heavy in animal products—meat, butter, eggs—could be the answer?

The Experiment

Three months ago, I took the plunge. I threw out my old habits and embraced a new way of eating. This wasn’t a strict carnivore or keto regimen; I didn’t measure macros or count calories. Instead, I followed what I now call “Dr. Dave’s Diet,” focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods:

  • Breakfast: Three eggs with butter, cheese, and yogurt.
  • Lunch: Meat-based meals like chicken, turkey, or a hamburger (no bun, no fries).
  • Dinner: Steak, fish, or chicken, often paired with a salad or sweet potato.

I eliminated processed foods, sugars, and simple carbs. Snacks? Gone. Late-night munchies? Not anymore.

The Results

Within weeks, I noticed profound changes. My energy skyrocketed, my joint pain lessened, and, most surprising of all, I wasn’t hungry between meals. I felt satiated, vibrant, and alive in ways I hadn’t experienced in years.

But the real test came when I visited my doctor for a full physical. I was nervous. After all, years of public messaging had ingrained the belief that high-fat diets are a fast track to heart disease.

When my results came in, I was stunned.

  • Total Cholesterol: 120 (an optimal level).
  • Triglycerides: 46.
  • Triglyceride-to-HDL Ratio: 0.8 (anything below 1 is phenomenal).

My doctor was amazed, calling it the best lipid panel she’d ever seen for me. Even my inflammation markers—though slightly elevated due to existing conditions—were in a healthy range.

What This Means

Let me be clear: I’m not suggesting everyone should adopt my diet. We’re all unique, with different bodies and needs. What works for me may not work for you. But this journey has taught me something crucial: we must listen to our bodies, challenge conventional wisdom, and be willing to experiment.

For years, I let fear and societal norms dictate my choices. What if I had never dared to try something new? I’d still be tired, inflamed, and wondering why I wasn’t thriving.

Lessons Learned

Here are some takeaways from my experiment that I believe can apply to any journey of self-discovery:

  1. Challenge the Norm: Just because something is “normal” doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Explore, experiment, and find your path.
  2. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how you feel—not just physically but mentally and emotionally.
  3. Stay Open-Minded: Be willing to pivot and try new approaches, even if they seem unconventional.
  4. Track Your Progress: Keep records, whether it’s through bloodwork, journaling, or self-assessments.
  5. Stay Consistent: Real change takes time. Commit to your journey and see it through.

Mental Health and Diet

Everything is connected—mind, body, and soul. When we fuel our bodies with the right nutrients, we create a foundation for mental clarity and emotional stability. Inflammation, often caused by poor diet, is linked to depression and anxiety. By reducing inflammatory foods and focusing on nourishing, whole foods, I’ve seen improvements not only in my physical health but also in my mental well-being.

The Courage to Try

This journey wasn’t easy. It required courage to break away from the “rules” and trust my instincts. But it was worth it. I feel better today—mentally, physically, and emotionally—than I have in years.

What About You?

I share this story not to convince you to eat like me but to inspire you to take charge of your health and happiness. Ask yourself:

  • Are you living in alignment with what feels right for you?
  • Are there areas of your life—diet, relationships, habits—where you’re following rules that don’t serve you?
  • What experiments could you try to discover your path to thriving?

Moving Forward

My goal isn’t just to help you feel better through microdosing or mental health tips—it’s to help you build a life you love. And that starts with breaking the rules that don’t work for you.

Whether it’s experimenting with your diet, exploring microdosing, or trying something entirely new, remember: You have the power to create the life you want.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Let’s make this year the one where we dare to break the rules, embrace the unknown, and transform our lives.

With love and courage,
Dr. Dave
