Exploring the Healing Path: Microdosing Cannabis
Welcome back to Microdose U! I’m Dr. Dave, and today, I’m taking you on a journey off the usual path—just a little detour, nothing too dramatic—but one that might surprise you. For years, I’ve shared my experiences with microdosing psychedelics, especially psilocybin and LSD, and how they’ve profoundly impacted my mental health and personal growth. But today, I want to talk about something a bit more mainstream, something legal, and something that’s probably a bit more familiar to most people: cannabis.
Now, before you jump to conclusions, I want to assure you that this isn’t about “getting high” or “zoning out.” You might be thinking, “Cannabis? Isn’t that just for getting stoned and listening to The Beatles?” If that’s your mindset, I get it, and I completely understand. But what if I told you that there’s a way to use cannabis, in very small, intentional doses, that doesn’t get you high, but offers a range of potential benefits? That’s what I want to dive into today.
More Info on Microdosing Cannabis
Microdosing cannabis is exactly what it sounds like: using a very small amount, usually one to two milligrams of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), sometimes combined with CBD (cannabidiol), to enhance well-being without the intoxicating effects. Microdosing cannabis is not about zoning out or being “stoned” in any way. It’s about tuning in—being more present, more centered, and more in touch with your surroundings and yourself.
For some people, microdosing cannabis works very similarly to microdosing psilocybin or LSD. It’s a gentle lift, a sense of ease, emotional softening, and yes, even a little creativity. We’re talking about amounts so small that you probably wouldn’t even notice them if you took them by accident. But when you use this dose intentionally, something starts to shift. Something changes.
Now, you may be wondering, “What are the benefits of microdosing cannabis?” Well, I’m so glad you asked, and let me walk you through a few of the top benefits I’ve personally experienced and that I’ve heard about from others.
1. Relief from Anxiety Without Pharmaceuticals
For so many of us, anxiety and nervous energy are a daily struggle. I’ve been there, and it’s not fun. When you’re constantly carrying low-level tension, it can start to wear on your mind and body. Microdosing cannabis can take just enough of the edge off to make life feel more manageable. It doesn’t flip you into strange states of mind or cause spiraling thoughts. Instead, it gently helps you feel more grounded and relaxed—without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.
The best part? It’s a non-addictive, natural alternative that’s far less likely to cause the kind of dependency or negative side effects that some anti-anxiety medications can. For me, it was a game changer, and I’ve heard the same from many others who’ve incorporated it into their routines.
2. Increased Creativity
One of the most noticeable benefits of microdosing cannabis is the boost it can give your creativity. Specifically, I’ve found that when I use a sativa-dominant strain in small doses, my mind becomes more fluid, ideas come easier, and my creativity flows. Conversations feel more engaging, and my brain just feels a little more alive.
It’s like opening a window to let in fresh air. The ideas come at you in a natural, effortless way, and things that would typically require a lot of effort seem to happen more spontaneously. Whether you’re working on a project or simply engaging in a conversation, creativity flows more easily with that gentle lift from cannabis. It’s subtle, but the effect is undeniably real.
3. Better Sleep
A good night’s sleep is something we all crave, but sometimes it’s difficult to achieve, especially if you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Microdosing cannabis before bed can help ease you into sleep, and for some people, it can even improve the quality of their rest.
While I’m not sure if it’s due to reduced cortisol levels or a more balanced nervous system, what I do know is that for many microdosers, cannabis has been a safe and effective alternative to traditional sleeping pills. Unlike sleeping pills, which can be addictive and carry potential health risks, cannabis offers a gentler, more natural solution without the grogginess the next morning.
4. Gentle Physical Pain Relief
Microdosing cannabis can also help with physical discomfort, especially with joint pain, inflammation, or even menstrual cramps. A tiny dose of THC, especially when combined with CBD, has been shown to relieve mild aches and pains without dulling your senses or knocking you out for the day.
In fact, just this morning, I took a small microdose of THC because my knees were hurting from a long hike over the past few days. Within about 30 minutes, the discomfort eased, and I felt much better. Microdosing has allowed me to manage my physical pain without resorting to pharmaceuticals, and I’ve found it to be both effective and non-intrusive in my daily life.
5. Increased Emotional Awareness
This is one of the more subtle but powerful benefits of microdosing cannabis. A small dose can help open up your emotional awareness, making it easier to pause before reacting. It helps you feel more present in your surroundings, which allows you to appreciate the moments you might have otherwise missed.
I’ve found that it’s particularly useful when I’m having one of those days where everything feels overwhelming or emotionally charged. Microdosing allows me to step back, take a breath, and approach my emotions with more clarity and presence. It’s like turning down the volume on the noise in my head and tuning into the richness of the moment.
6. Enhanced Connection to Movement and Flow
For those who engage in physical activity, microdosing cannabis can enhance the experience by heightening body awareness and reducing performance anxiety. Whether you’re going for a hike, doing yoga, skiing, or hitting the gym, a microdose of cannabis can help you feel more present in your body, more in tune with your movements, and more connected to the flow of the activity.
I’ve personally found this to be incredibly powerful during sound baths, yoga, and sensory deprivation tank sessions. It’s not about getting high or zoning out. It’s about feeling more alive during movement—more attuned to your breath, rhythm, and surroundings.
A Note on Intentionality and Dosage
As with psilocybin and LSD, the key to microdosing cannabis is intentionality. It’s not about escaping life or numbing your mind. It’s about connecting with yourself, your emotions, and the world around you in a deeper way. When I microdose cannabis, I do it with respect, setting an intention for the day, and journaling about my experience.
This intentional practice helps me feel more present, more aware, and more alive. I use my journal to track how I’m feeling, what changes I notice in my mood, creativity, and physical sensations. I find that keeping this practice reflective and mindful allows me to get the most out of my experience.
Is Microdosing Cannabis Right for You?
If you’ve never thought about cannabis this way, I hope this post has given you something new to consider. Maybe it opens up a new door, or maybe it confirms that cannabis isn’t for you—and that’s perfectly okay. The point is that microdosing cannabis, like any other tool, is personal. It’s about what feels right for you, what aligns with your goals, and what helps you connect with yourself in a meaningful way.
If you’re already microdosing cannabis or if you try it after reading this post, I’d love to hear about it. Connect with me on YouTube, Patreon, or even in the comments below. Let’s keep this conversation honest, human, and open.
From the Mailbag
Now, let’s read and answer a couple of questions/comments from the mailbag:
First up: Gucci Bucket Hat asked about their first bad trip.
I’m so sorry to hear that, Gucci Bucket Hat. The first thing I’ll say is that it sounds like you might not have done this in the best setting. Having the right environment and intention is key. If you’re going into a trip without the proper setting, it can lead to negative experiences. Next time, try doing it in a safe, familiar space with some calming music. And if you’re new to the experience, consider having a trusted friend or trip sitter with you.
Next, a comment about a post from Trippy Medicines Inc:
