The 2025-2026 Absolute Beginners Guide to Microdosing Magic Mushrooms
Hey there, it’s Dr. Dave. Welcome to Microdose U! I’m so glad you’ve found your way to this space where we talk about microdosing psilocybin mushrooms, the benefits, the methods, and how this journey can help improve your mental and physical health.
This week, we’re diving into what I believe is one of the most important episodes I do every year—the 2025-2026 Absolute Beginners Guide to Microdosing Magic Mushrooms.
This is the fourth time we’ve done this kind of episode, and every year, it gets a little better because we’ve learned so much more about how psilocybin works in the brain and the way it can positively impact our lives. Trust me when I say you’ll want to listen all the way through because I’m going to share some key insights that you won’t want to miss—especially if you’re just starting on your microdosing journey.
What is Microdosing?
Let’s start with the basics: what is microdosing?
Microdosing is the act of taking a sub-perceptual dose of psilocybin mushrooms. In other words, you’re not aiming to go on a full-blown psychedelic trip. You won’t be seeing crazy patterns or fractals, and you won’t feel “high” in any traditional sense of the word. The goal is to take a small enough dose that you can go about your daily life as normal—functional, clear-headed, and focused.
Think of it as about 10% of a typical psychedelic dose. It’s a small enough amount that it doesn’t impair your day-to-day tasks, but it’s just enough to create subtle shifts in your mind and your nervous system that can make a big difference over time.
Who Should Microdose?
So, who’s microdosing, and why should you consider it?
The most common reason people microdose is for mental health reasons, especially for things like anxiety and depression. And let’s face it, who isn’t looking for a bit of relief from those things in today’s world?
But it’s not just about mental health. People microdose for all kinds of reasons, and here are just a few:
- Creativity Boost: If you’re someone who writes, paints, makes music, or works in any creative field, microdosing can be a game changer. It can open up parts of your brain that allow you to think in new ways and be more inspired in your work.
- Physical Performance: Yes, it sounds wild, but I’ve used microdosing for physical activities like skiing, cycling, and even hitting the gym. It’s like a confidence boost that isn’t based on ego—it’s real, grounded confidence in your ability to perform.
- Spiritual Connection: For some, microdosing helps them feel more connected to themselves, to the universe, or to nature. It enhances awareness, and in my experience, it has helped me tune into things I never noticed before.
- Overall Physical Health: Here’s something many don’t expect when starting out. Microdosing psilocybin can teach you things about your physical health that you never knew. I’ve learned more about my body—how I sleep, my energy levels, even my digestion—since I started microdosing. It’s not just about the mental effects. It’s everything.
Is Microdosing Safe?
Now, one of the most common questions I get asked is, “Is microdosing safe?”
Absolutely, yes.
Psilocybin is not addictive, and there’s zero risk of overdose. That’s not something you can say about a lot of substances out there (looking at you, alcohol). If you take too much, sure, you’ll probably end up on a wild psychedelic ride, but you’ll come down eventually, and you’ll be fine. It’s not dangerous.
But, as with anything, it’s important to do your research, understand what you’re taking, and, ideally, use it in a place where it’s legal or decriminalized. I’m not going to pretend that the legal situation is ideal everywhere—it’s not—but that doesn’t change the fact that psilocybin is safe when used responsibly.
When it comes to sourcing your microdosing medicine, please be cautious. There are many scammers out there, and buying from unreliable sources can lead to issues with safety and quality. That’s why we only discuss trusted, vetted sources on our premium Patreon page – a private space for serious, like-minded individuals who are committed to using psilocybin responsibly. How to Get Started with Microdosing
Alright, so let’s talk about how you actually start microdosing.
The most important thing to know here is that dosing is key. Microdosing is about precision, and it’s really easy to mess it up if you’re not careful. So, I recommend starting with 100-200 milligrams of dried, ground-up psilocybin mushrooms. You don’t need to get crazy with it, just start small.
And here’s something I didn’t realize when I first started—it’s okay to experiment a little. Unlike pharmaceuticals, psilocybin doesn’t have to be 100% precise down to the milligram every time. So if you’re feeling good with a little more one day, or a little less the next, that’s fine. The goal is to get into a rhythm that feels right for you.
Here’s my recommended protocol: Take your 150 milligrams (or so) for 3-4 days in a row, then take 1-2 days off. Repeat that cycle. This gives your body a chance to reset and helps you assess how you’re feeling without overdoing it.
When you’re just starting out, the best way to take your microdose is capsules. Capsules are the most predictable form because you know exactly what you’re getting. You can also try tea or even chocolate—but capsules are generally easier to control, especially when you’re first getting started.
What to Expect When You Microdose
Okay, you’ve done your research, you’ve got your dose figured out, and you’re wondering, “What’s going to happen?”
Nothing dramatic. The effects are subtle, but over time, you’ll start to notice little shifts. For example, you might feel a little more at ease in situations that normally stress you out. Your creativity might flow more easily. You’ll probably notice a bit more clarity in your thinking and an increased ability to focus on the present moment.
You won’t feel high, you won’t feel stoned, and you definitely won’t be tripping like in a classic psychedelic experience. It’s a very gentle shift—nothing intense. But when you start noticing it, you’ll see that things just feel a little bit better.
Over time, with consistency, you’ll see more improvement in areas like anxiety, depression, and even your physical health—trust me, it works. And the longer you stick with it, the more you’ll realize how much better you feel overall.
Is Microdosing Right for You?
I want to be real here. Microdosing isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s not going to magically fix everything overnight, but I firmly believe it can transform your life for the better. I say this from experience—I’ve been microdosing for over four years, and I’ve seen firsthand how it has changed my mental and physical health.
It’s about progress, not perfection.
If you’re ready to commit, if you’re all-in, this could be a life-changing tool for you. But, if you’re just looking for a quick fix or a shortcut, microdosing may not be for you. You’ve got to be prepared to be patient and stick with it. Change takes time. But it will happen.
A Quick Word on SSRIs
For those of you who are already on antidepressants (like SSRIs), I know there’s a lot of confusion about whether you should continue taking them while microdosing. My advice? Continue your SSRIs while starting your microdosing regimen. Over time, when you feel the effects of microdosing kicking in, and you’re seeing improvements, you can work with your doctor to slowly taper off the antidepressants.
But please, don’t stop any medication without consulting your doctor. Microdosing is a powerful tool, but it’s important to work with a professional to make sure you’re doing it in a safe, sustainable way.
The Takeaway
Microdosing isn’t a quick fix. It’s a long-term commitment to yourself, your mental health, and your well-being. It takes consistency and an all-in mindset, but if you stick with it, it can change your life in ways you never imagined.
