Ate Mushrooms and Went to a Chinese Bakery

A Caring Moment in a Chinese Bakery

Life has a way of leading us into unexpected places, doesn’t it? Sometimes, you end up in a quiet park; other times, you find yourself in a bustling Chinese bakery with a journal, a fountain pen, and a microdose of mushrooms. That’s exactly where my latest podcast, Ate Mushrooms and Went to a Chinese Bakery,” was born.

Let me take you there.

Why the Bakery?

Why did I choose a Chinese bakery for this session? Honestly, I don’t know. Something told me to go, so I followed that nudge. Maybe it was the pull of curiosity, the lure of a warm cup of oolong tea, or the simple desire to see where life would take me.

That’s the beauty of microdosing: it doesn’t always have to come with a grand intention. Sometimes, the best experiences unfold when you let the medicine—and life—guide you.

The Scene: A Blend of Life and Noise

As I settled in, the space buzzed with life. The hum of conversations, the clatter of plates, and the occasional burst of laughter filled the air. It wasn’t the serene, nature-filled setting you might imagine for reflection, but it was alive.

I sipped my oolong tea, pulled out my journal, and began to write. My goal wasn’t rigid. I let the thoughts come, flowing freely onto the page.

An Unexpected Interaction

Midway through my session, a group of mentally challenged adults entered the bakery. They gathered around tables, chatting, laughing, and simply enjoying their day.

One man approached my table. With a kind smile, he said, “I hope you have a wonderful day.”

That small gesture—so genuine, so simple—meant the world to me. I’d had a rough weekend, dealing with plantar fasciitis and the aftereffects of a shingles vaccine. His words weren’t just polite; they were uplifting, a reminder of the goodness in people.

Reflections on Gratitude and Perspective

That interaction sparked a wave of gratitude and reflection.

  • Health and Privilege: I thought about how fortunate I am for my health and the ability to enjoy these small moments.
  • Different Journeys: I pondered the lives of the people around me, including the group of adults. They seemed happy, perhaps even more so than many of us who get bogged down by life’s chaos.
  • Kindness as a Gift: A simple act of kindness—a smile, a kind word—can ripple through someone’s day.

This was the heart of my session. The bakery wasn’t just a setting; it became a teacher, reminding me of the joy and connection available in everyday life.

When Things Go Wrong, They Go Right

The podcast I recorded in the bakery was, in my eyes, one of my best. I spoke from the heart, inspired by the moment. But when I played it back at home, the background noise was overwhelming. The clatter of the bakery drowned out my voice, rendering the recording unusable.

Initially, I was frustrated. But then I realized the lesson:

  • Not everything we create or experience needs to be perfect.
  • The act of being present and creating is valuable, even if the final product isn’t.
  • Sometimes, the beauty is in the process, not the outcome.

Happiness and Struggle Coexist

I often talk about my happiness scale, where I’ve found myself consistently at a 9.5 or 10. But happiness doesn’t mean life is without challenges.

There are days when I wake up feeling out of sorts. Days when pain or fatigue creeps in. Happiness isn’t about eliminating struggles; it’s about finding peace and joy despite them.

Microdosing has been instrumental in helping me maintain this balance. It doesn’t erase challenges but offers clarity and calm, making them easier to navigate.

The Beauty of Simplicity

One takeaway from my time at the bakery was the beauty of simplicity:

  • The Joy of Tea: A warm cup of oolong tea, enjoyed slowly, became a moment of mindfulness.
  • The Act of Writing: Putting pen to paper felt grounding, a way to process and reflect.
  • Human Connection: A stranger’s kind words reminded me of the importance of connection.

It doesn’t take much to create a meaningful day.
